It was here, in the middle of all this, that Abigail was born. Here she grew up in one of the small municipal, three bedroom houses that she shared with her parents and her twin brother, Freddy, who was actually christened, Frederik, but “Freddy” became the name they all came to use. In the same manner Abigail was replaced with simply “Abi’ for short. Only when their parents were serious, angry or upset, would they actually address them by their full names.

Abigail was the older of the twins. She was born a couple of hours before her brother. They both were as ugly as sin at birth. They were not what one would normally call “beautiful” babies. Neither were they much to write home about as toddlers or young children. Red hair, freckles and dirt jumped out at you. Some might have considered them as “cute”.

However, as the years slipped by and they matured and started taking on shape and developing a personality of their own, it was Abigail that suddenly started to shed her “ugliness”, or rather, transmuted her red hair and looks into something very special.
Like a worm turning into a beautiful butterfly, Abigail Vermaak slowly transformed from the clumsy little ugly duckling into a magnificent swan.
With her sky blue eyes and good-looking features set against her coppery golden coloured hair, she was a head-turner from an early age. She had what one might call a natural beauty, the kind you get without using make up. Long lashes emphasised eyes that were a light, clear blue almost white blue. They had a naughty but intelligent twinkle in them.
Abigail had petite but perfect facial features. She had that kind of beauty that made you want to stare at her, wondering just what was it that made her so special.  She had the look of innocence when she smiled with pearly white teeth, framed by perfect lips and deep dimples in both cheeks.
Her beauty was not only skin deep, she had a pleasant, friendly and outgoing personality and was highly intelligent. She was a conscientious young girl that finished what she started. Once she put her mind to something, she would do her best at it and would excel in all she touched.

Abigail might have had petite facial features, that gave her an elf –like beauty, but the rest of her was everything but elfin. Although she was not tall, she was of medium height and had an athletic physique sharpened and sculpted from years of physical activity. She had good bone structure and small slim joints, but good muscle definition and tone for a girl her age.

Apart from her striking facial features, the thing that jumped out at you immediately when you first saw her, was her legs. Even in a pair of jeans one could see that she had shapely, muscular legs that came from years of healthy exercise and physical action.
